Iraq’s prime minister pledges ‘strategic planning’ to advance women’s rights

BAGHDAD – Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani marked International Women’s Day by underscoring the government’s “strategic planning” to advance women’s rights and broaden their role in Iraq’s development.

“It is an opportunity to honor their contributions to development across various fields and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Iraqi women for the advancement, stability, and prosperity,” Al-Sudani’s media office said in a statement.

Statement from Al-Sudani’s media office:

We extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Iraqi women on the occasion of International Women’s Day- a day to proudly recognize the key role of women in nation-building and societal progress. It is an opportunity to honor their contributions to development across various fields and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Iraqi women for the advancement, stability, and prosperity of our beloved country.

Our government has given special priority to women’s affairs by actively adopting and implementing legislation that safeguards their rights. We have worked to enhance their rightful status by ensuring their participation in key responsibilities and leadership positions. Furthermore, our administration has integrated women into government initiatives and programs, alongside ongoing efforts to reduce unemployment and illiteracy rates among women and support rural women and female pioneers in sports, culture, science, and the arts.

The government has embraced strategic planning to elevate the status of women, launching the National Strategy for Iraqi Women (2023-2030) and adopting the Second Updated National Strategy to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls (2023-2030). We also established the Supreme Council for Women as the primary entity responsible for creating opportunities that empower Iraqi women.

In celebration of the National Day of Iraqi Women, observed annually on March 3, we announced five major development projects and programs, including:

The Third National Plan for Women, Peace, and Security (2025-2030). The National Data Platform for Women, which provides up-to-date information on women’s issues, The National Network of Women Peace Mediators.  The establishment of the Women, Peace, and Security Institute. The launch of the “Pioneers of Change” leadership program to develop women’s leadership skills

With these initiatives, we have achieved unprecedented milestones for Iraqi women-both in legislation and direct support mechanisms ensuring their continued empowerment and active participation in shaping Iraq’s future.
