Kurdish Iranian worker dies in Erbil construction fall, rights group says

ERBIL — An Iranian Kurdish worker died after falling at a construction site in Erbil, according to rights monitors, though the local labor union said it had not been formally notified.

Hana Human Rights Organization, an independent group that monitors conditions in Iranian Kurdish areas, identified the worker as Talib Momen Bromandi from Nowsud in the Hawraman region. Group spokesperson Hadi Rasoulzadeh said the incident occurred Thursday, Aug. 28.

A source close to the case confirmed the fall took place Thursday, not Friday as some reports claimed, and said Bromandi died after falling from one of Erbil’s buildings. His body remains at the city’s forensic medicine department and has not yet been transferred to Iran.

The Erbil branch of the Kurdistan Workers Syndicate said it had not been informed. “The organization said the incident happened on Friday. We were not on duty that day, and no one by that name or any worker’s death has been reported to us. However, we will begin our own investigation and confirm the identity,” branch head Hassan Ramazan told 964media.

Data reviewed by 964media shows seven workplace fatalities in Erbil between Jan. 1 and Aug. 30, 2025. If confirmed, Bromandi’s death would raise the total to eight.
