'Dangerous escalation'

Al-Araji stresses on ‘reducing tensions’ in meeting with Iranian ambassador

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji affirmed Baghdad’s opposition to using Iraqi territory as a base for attacks on neighboring countries during a meeting Saturday with Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Kazem Al Sadeq.

According to a statement from Al-Araji’s office, the meeting addressed the latest regional developments and recent escalations, which Al-Araji described as “dangerous.”

“Iraq has a firm and clear position regarding the dangerous escalation taking place,” he said, rejecting the use of the “Iraq’s territory as a launchpad for aggression against neighboring states, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Al-Araji emphasized the need to “reduce tensions” in the region, citing the importance of “preserving the security and stability of its countries and peoples.”

Israel launched a wide-ranging military operation early Friday under the name Operation Rising Lion, targeting more than 200 sites in Iran, including nuclear facilities. Iranian officials confirmed the deaths of several senior military commanders and nuclear scientists. At least 78 people were reported killed, and hundreds wounded. In retaliation, Iran fired dozens of missiles at Israel, some of which reached Tel Aviv. Israeli officials reported three deaths and about 100 injuries.
