Iraqi authorities arrest five suspects in Ain al-Asad airbase attack

ANBAR – Iraqi authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of five individuals involved in the August 5th attack on Ain al-Asad airbase in Anbar governorate, conducted under judicial warrants.

A statement from Iraq’s Security Media Cell on Thursday said that a joint investigative committee from relevant security agencies carried out the arrests of “five individuals involved in this illegal act … based on the committee’s field findings, forensic evidence, thorough legal investigations, witness testimonies, information cross-referencing, and judicial approvals.”

The attack on the Ain al-Asad base in western Iraq, which hosts American troops and U.S.-led coalition personnel against the Islamic State group, resulted in five U.S. personnel being wounded. The assailants launched two rockets from a Kia truck in Haditha district.

This incident has heightened concerns about Iraq being drawn into the ongoing conflict between Israel and the pro-Iran axis of resistance. The attack coincided with Iranian threats to retaliate for the assassination of Palestinian Hamas leader Ismael Haniyeh in Tehran last week.
