Amid unemployement

Ramadan drinks stalls provide welcome income for local youth

BAGHDAD — In West Baghdad’s Ghazaliya area and other parts of the capital, selling juice and yogurt during Ramadan has provided a welcome – if temporary – boost  for many young people, amid widespread youth unemployment issue.

The demand for natural juice and yogurt increases significantly during Ramadan, particularly before Iftar – the sunset meal that breaks the fast of Muslims during which no food or drink is consumed – making this business especially appealing to Ghazaliya’s job-seeking youth.

There are more than 15 juice and yogurt carts in the Ghazaliya area alone.

Karrar Mohammed, a juice seller, told 964media, “This job opportunity helps us, the unemployed youth, and provides income to support my family of five.”

He also said, “We change our business focus with the seasons. During watermelon season, we sell watermelon, and during nabq [Christ’s thorn jujube] season, we sell nabq.

“We adapt our work to the seasons to earn an honest living.”
