15-year-old flees home to escape school

RAWANDUZ, January 27 – Ismail Khalid, a 15-year-old from Rawanduz who fled home to escape his studies has been found safe and sound in Erbil.

Khalid Qadir, Ismail’s father, got on  social media in Soran to post a notice and photograph of his son, enlisting public assistance to find him.

Khalid explained that Ismail, disenchanted with education, had left a note for his family stating, “I don’t like studying, so I’m leaving. Don’t look for me. I’m going somewhere far away and I won’t come back.”

Despite Ismail’s struggles in school, his wish to leave full-time education was a hard pill for his parents to swallow.

The family received a late night phone call with news of Ismail’s location in Erbil.

Upon Ismail’s return, the family resolved to eschew pushing him back into the educational system immediately. Instead, they intend to provide support and understanding, allowing Ismail to make his own choices about his education.
