Overflow reported in seven dams

 Reservoirs in Kurdistan Region reach near full capacity

DUHOK, January 23 – Small-sized reservoirs across the Kurdistan Region are at full- or near-full capacity, with seven out of 23 lakes experiencing overflow, according to Rahman Khani, the director general of the region’s dams and water reservoirs directorate.

Khani revealed to 964media that several dams, including Dewana, Khans, Smaquli, Awa Spi, and Chami Smora, are currently experiencing overflow.

A total of six dams have been constructed in the region over the past two years, with ongoing construction at the Smaquli Dam, which is 65 percent complete and due to be fully operational in 2024.

Two additional dams in Duhok are currently under construction, with completion rates at 50 percent.

The dams serve multiple purposes in the region, providing hydroelectric power generation and tourism facilities, in addition to playing an important role in water management.
