Kut fishermen searching patiently for fish in winter

KUT, January 19 – Despite the wintry chill and a scarcity of fish, dedicated fishing enthusiasts persist in their pursuit along the Tigris River, near the Kut Dam. Undeterred by the cold weather, these avid fishermen cast hooks and nets into the river’s waters, patiently waiting.

Khaled Abu Maryam told 964media of the community’s knowledge of prime fishing locations and experience gained from extended fishing sessions.

Acknowledging the sparse fish population during winter, Maryam noted when they do catch fish, they tend to be of considerable size. The men prefer spots in the vicinity of Kut Dam and the Al-Dahra area to the north of the city.

Maryam shared that fishing has instilled in him virtues of patience and calm, qualities deemed essential in daily life. However, he expressed concern about the environment, lamenting the neglectful disposal of waste by some individuals that tarnishes the scenic riverbanks.

Saif Al-Badri, another fisherman, shared that fishermen prefer using traditional methods including hooks, baskets and nets.
