‘Shabbout’ stands out among all

Jalawla fish market sees high demand for freshwater fish

DIYALA, January 18 — The fish market in Jalawla is witnessing high demand for river and freshwater fish, considered by many as ideal for frying. Fishermen take their boats onto the Diyala River each morning and evening to meet market demand, which include species like carp and catfish.

Karim Fleyeh, Fishmonger:

“The Shabbout [a local variety of carp] is the finest fish caught and displayed here in the market. We buy it from fishermen at a rate of 6,500 to 7,000 dinars per kilogram. Its taste is distinct from pond carp. The fish are caught from the Diyala River and brought here, with the price determined by the type, weight, and size of the fish. Those who are experienced with Shabbout and know its taste buy it without questioning the price. We also have Khashni or what is known as ‘Biyah,’ as the people in southern Iraq call it, and there is a significant demand for it here as well.”

Maher Raad, Local Resident:

“The people of Jalawla prefer river fish because it is fresh, clean, and has a delicious taste, especially the fish from the Diyala River.
Pond fish are not suitable for frying, and their prices are high. They are only good for grilling. However, this Shabbout is specifically for the frying pan and Iraqis love fried fish.”

Abdul Karim Al-Salehi, Local Resident:

“The fish in the Jalawla market is fresh, directly from the river to the market. Shabbout and Buni fish are not available in ponds, which is why they are in high demand. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are considered fish days in Jalawla, and fish are sold out within minutes.”
