Paralympic champion Najla Imad inspires all
Iraqi University Table Tennis Championship gets underway in Najaf
NAJAF — The University of Al-Furat Al-Awsat in Kufa inaugurated the Iraq University Table Tennis Championship on Sunday, bringing together 54 universities and more than 200 players in an event scheduled to run for five days. Matches are being held in morning and evening sessions under the supervision of professional referees.
Among the standout participants is Paralympic gold medalist Najla Imad, representing Diyala University for the first time. Imad expressed her appreciation for the event’s organization.
“This is my first time representing Diyala University in the Iraq Universities Championship,” Imad told 964media. “The atmosphere is wonderful, the competitive spirit is high, and the organization is excellent. The hall’s spaciousness adds to the experience. Our ambition is to claim first place.”.
Najla Imad, a 19-year-old Iraqi para table tennis player, made history at the Paris 2024 Paralympics by winning Iraq’s first-ever gold medal in the sport. Overcoming severe injuries from a 2008 bombing in Diyala’s Baquba district that resulted in the loss of her right forearm and parts of both legs, she began playing table tennis at age 10.
Nassir Ahmed, director of sports activities at Al-Furat Al-Awsat University, highlighted the tournament’s significance and scale.
“Al-Furat Al-Awsat University is proud to host the Iraq Universities Table Tennis Championship, welcoming professors, students, and athletes from across the country,” Ahmed told 964media. “We have 54 participating universities, including government and private institutions, and over 200 players, some of whom represent national teams and Iraqi clubs. The championship is managed by referees from the central union, who have provided all the necessary officiating tools to ensure success. The event will run for five days, with matches held in both morning and evening sessions.”.
Rania Jassim, a national team player and representative of Baghdad University, shared her hopes for success. “I’m proud to represent Baghdad University, and we aim to achieve results that honor our institution,” Jassim said. “The atmosphere has been electric since the opening ceremony, and we are eager to compete and secure victories.”.
