'Unprecedented levels' for January

Heavy rainfall fills reservoirs in Akre district

AKRE, January 18 — An unprecedented amount of rainfall has led to flooding in ponds and reservoirs across Akre, according to an official in the district’s Directorate of Irrigation.

Ramazan Sharif heads Akre’s irrigation directorate said the flooding marked the first time that ponds experienced elevated water levels this high since his office began recording data.

“This marks the first occurrence of pond and dam overflows in January, a notable departure from last year when it occurred in April,” Sharif noted.

Beyond filling reservoirs, the substantial rainfall has also reportedly contributed to rejuvenating a number of previously-dried springs in Akre, causing an elevation in groundwater levels.

Akre district, host to 30 different reservoirs, absorbs four million cubic meters of water annually, according to  Sharif.
