Al-Sudani discusses UNAMI’s future with Guterres in Davos
ERBIL, January 18 — Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss the future relationship between Iraq and the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
A statement from Al-Sudani’s press office read:
The Prime Minister, Mr. Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani, met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres, on the sidelines of his participation in the 54th Davos Economic Forum, held in Switzerland. During the meeting, they discussed ongoing developments on the international stage, the effects of the war in Gaza, its impact on the stability of the region and the world, and the threat of genocide faced by the Palestinian people.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Al-Sudani expressed his thanks to Mr. Guterres for his supportive positions on the Palestinian issue and his efforts to stop the unjust war on Gaza, confirming Iraq’s firm and principled stance towards the right of the Palestinian people to live decently on their land.
Mr. Guterres expressed his solidarity with the Palestinian people, confirming the continuation of the United Nations’ efforts to end the war in Gaza and to stop the suffering of unarmed civilians.
The meeting also addressed the decision of the Iraqi government to determine the future form of the relationship with the United Nations Mission (UNAMI), after Iraq completed the building of its constitutional institutions and fulfilled its international obligations, in addition to agreeing to transition the relationship and reorganize it, especially with the UN agencies according to their specialization, as well as continuing cooperation with the international organization in efforts to reduce the effects of climate change, desertification, and water scarcity.
