First Sharazur watermelon harvest reaches Sulaymaniyah markets

SULAYMANIYAH — The first watermelon harvest from the Sharazur Plain has reached local markets, with vendors saying demand is driven by the fruit’s quality, chemical-free cultivation and low price.

Brwa Kamaran, a local fruit seller, brought a pickup truck loaded with watermelons from Chenakhchian village to the market, where he is selling them for 400 Iraqi dinars ($0.26) per kilogram.

“This is the first day and the first harvest of Sharazur watermelons,” Kamaran told 964media on Sunday. “We sell them on the condition that they are firm, sweet and, most importantly, grown without chemicals.”

He said the watermelons are grown naturally, with no harmful chemicals or artificial ripening agents, and that he guarantees the quality to every customer.

The Sharazur Plain, in Sulaymaniyah governorate, is one of the Kurdistan Region’s main agricultural areas, known for its fertile soil and crop production. Watermelon is among the region’s summer crops, and vendors say this season’s harvest is now reaching local markets.
