Trial date set for Halabja chemical weapons supply case
SULAYMANIYAH, January 17 — Representatives from 12 companies and defendants accused of selling chemical weapons to the Ba’ath regime are set to appear before a Sulaymaniyah court on March 12.
The court has received over 4,700 complaints from citizens, including survivors and relatives of those killed in the 1988 chemical attack on Halabja.
A senior source within the Sulaymaniyah court, who spoke on condition of anonymity, informed 964media that the scheduled hearing will take place in March, barring exceptional circumstances.
The court has also reportedly urged victims and their relatives to submit documents immediately in order to expedite compensation.
The case in question stems from a lawsuit filed by the Halabja Chemical Attack Victims Association on March 13, 2018, against 25 foreign companies and other defendants accused of supplying chemical weapons and equipment to the former Ba’athist regime. The trial’s inaugural hearing took place on May 23, 2018.
