Ambassador denies talk of U.S. sanctions on Iraqi banks

BAGHDAD, July 30 — In a brief announcement on her Twitter account, U.S. Ambassador Alina Romanowski stated that the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) has taken “appropriate and swift” measures following a telephone conversation with the U.S. Treasury.

The conversation discussed recent actions to restrict 14 Iraqi banks, and the Ambassador denied that these restrictions were “sanctions.”
