Man in Sulaymaniyah accused of AI voice scam that netted $17,000
SULAYMANIYAH — Sulaymaniyah police have arrested a 24-year-old man accused of using artificial intelligence to alter his voice and pose as a woman on Snapchat, allegedly deceiving a resident into sending him $17,000 through a fake romantic relationship.
The Sulaymaniyah Police Directorate said in a statement Sunday that officers from the Raparin Police Station arrested the suspect after an investigation prompted by a formal complaint. Police said he created a fake Snapchat account under a woman’s identity and used AI to make his voice sound female, built a fake romantic relationship with the complainant, obtained the money and then deleted the account.
The suspect, identified by the initials D.T.A., confessed during questioning, police said. He has been detained by order of an investigating judge under Article 2 of Iraq’s Law on the Misuse of Communication Devices and Article 456 of the penal code, and the investigation is continuing.
