Leaders meet on sidelines of Arab-Islamic Summit
Iraqi and Syrian presidents discuss regional situation, condemn aggression on Gaza
November 11 — President Abdul Latif Rashid of Iraq and President Bashar Al-Assad of Syria met on the sidelines of the Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh on Saturday to discuss bilateral relations, developments in the region, and the situation in Palestine.
Both leaders condemned the aggression on Gaza and emphasized the need for an immediate halt to the attacks, the protection of civilians, and the provision of humanitarian aid to besieged families.
A statement from President Rashid’s office said:
President Abdul Latif Rashid and President Bashar Al-Assad discussed the relations between the two countries and ways to enhance them. They affirm their strong condemnation of the aggression on Gaza. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh.
During the meeting, the deep historical ties between Iraq and Syria were emphasized, along with the necessity to develop cooperation in various fields for the common interests of both brotherly nations. The importance of collaborative efforts to combat terrorism and extremism was highlighted.
President Rashid stressed the significance of coordination and consultation on mutual concerns to enhance international peace and security. He reiterated Iraq’s principled support for the Palestinian people in achieving their legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
Both presidents strongly condemned the aggression on Gaza, targeting civilians and hospitals. They emphasized the immediate cessation of bombardment, the protection of the population, and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to besieged families through safe passages.
President Bashar Al-Assad expressed Syria’s steadfast support for Iraq’s efforts to maintain its security and sovereignty, expressing his country’s desire to strengthen relations, enhance cooperation, and coordinate in various fields. He commended Iraq’s supportive stance toward the Syrian people.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein and Dr. Ayman Sousan, the Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister.
