Erbil governor says New Year preparations complete as tourism boost expected

ERBIL — Erbil Gov. Omed Khoshnaw said Tuesday that preparations for New Year celebrations are complete across administrative, security and tourism sectors, and officials expect higher tourist arrivals, especially from central and southern Iraq.

“From all aspects, administratively, in terms of security, and regarding tourism, preparations have been properly made within the borders of Erbil governorate to welcome the new year,” Khoshnaw told 964media.

He said the organized activities and preparations are expected to boost visitor numbers this year.

The announcement comes as the Kurdistan Regional Government said official work will be suspended Thursday, Dec. 25, in observance of Christmas.

Erbil authorities began holiday preparations in mid-December, outlining plans to secure public venues and manage large gatherings expected during the Christmas and New Year period, according to a governorate statement.

Erbil hosts annual New Year’s Eve festivities that draw thousands of visitors and include public events organized largely by private sector groups.
