Fayyad meets Khazali as blocs negotiate government formation
BAGHDAD — A delegation from Prime Minister Al-Sudani’s Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by Faleh Al-Fayyad, met Wednesday with Qais Al-Khazali, secretary-general of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, to discuss efforts to accelerate the government formation process.
Iraqis voted for all 329 seats in the Council of Representatives last month.
According to a statement from Khazali’s office, the meeting addressed “the need for the next government to be capable of facing challenges, enhancing stability, improving public services, and meeting the aspirations of the Iraqi people.”
Fayyad congratulated Khazali on the election results and praised the conduct of the vote, describing it as calm and transparent. He said, “What happened reflects the progress of political awareness among Iraqis and their keenness to actively participate in shaping their country’s future.”
Khazali welcomed the delegation and said the election results place “a great responsibility on all parties in the coming phase,” emphasizing the need for serious cooperation among political forces. “The Iraqi people are waiting for practical and tangible steps,” he said.
Final results show the Reconstruction and Development Coalition led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani won 46 seats, but no party or coalition secured a majority. Forming a government will require alliances and compromises among several blocs.
