Baghdad, Lebanon security chief discuss closer cooperation on crime, drugs

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met Saturday with Lebanon’s director of general security, Maj. Gen. Hassan Chaker, to discuss expanding security cooperation between the two countries, his office said.

In a brief statement, the prime minister’s media office said the talks focused on “mechanisms to advance security cooperation,” with an emphasis on combating drug trafficking, tackling transnational organized crime and strengthening intelligence coordination in support of regional stability.

The office of al-Sudani said in a statement:

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Saturday received Lebanon’s Director of General Security, Maj. Gen. Hassan Chaker.

The meeting included discussions on mechanisms to advance security cooperation between the two countries, particularly in combating drug trafficking, transnational organized crime, and in intelligence coordination, in ways that support efforts to strengthen regional stability.

His Excellency affirmed Iraq’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations in a manner that serves common interests and supports Lebanon’s stability, security and territorial integrity. He noted the importance of enhancing cooperation and coordination to confront challenges and achieve security across the region.

For his part, the Lebanese director of general security expressed appreciation for Iraq’s supportive positions toward his country at all levels, stressing the importance of unifying positions and coordinating efforts to address crises and reinforce security and stability.
