Iraq defeats Bahrain 2-1 in FIFA Arab Cup opener

BAGHDAD — Iraq opened its Arab Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Bahrain on Wednesday in Doha, Qatar.

Striker Ayman Hussein put Iraq ahead before Mohanad Ali doubled the lead to make it 2-0. Bahrain pulled one back in the second half, but Iraq held on to secure all three points.

The 2025 Arab Cup is being hosted by Qatar from Dec. 1 to 18, with 16 national teams competing in the tournament. It is being organized under FIFA for the second time.

Iraq is preparing for its crucial intercontinental playoff match that will decide entry into the World Cup next year.
