Karbala Municipality warns of flooding risks after tires found in sewer openings

KARBALA — Karbala Municipality on Wednesday published images showing tires recovered from sewer openings in the city, warning that such obstructions have led to serious blockages in the drainage system and could cause neighborhood flooding during the rainy season.

In a statement, the municipality called on residents to avoid discarding waste and debris in sewer manholes and to report any violations or misuse of the infrastructure.

“We would like to draw your attention to the importance of preserving the main sewage and drainage networks in the streets, which are public property and a service provided to you,” the statement said.

Iraq’s weather agency warned Wednesday that an active weather system is expected to move over the country beginning Sunday, Dec. 7, bringing rain of varying intensity, thunderstorms and a risk of flash floods in low-lying areas and valleys in the north and east.

Officials noted that the presence of waste, debris, and tires in the sewers can lead to “serious blockages that may result in complete flooding of several residential neighborhoods,” affecting homes, streets, and commercial areas.

“This infrastructure is your service, provided by the Karbala Sewer Directorate. Preserving it ensures continued service and protects neighborhoods from the risks of flooding and blockages,” the statement added.
