Sudani hails victory as his Reconstruction and Development coalition tops Iraq’s parliamentary elections
BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani declared victory for his Reconstruction and Development Coalition after Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission confirmed it received 1,317,491 votes — the highest total nationwide in the 2025 parliamentary elections.
“Our coalition, Reconstruction and Development, comes first because we believe that Iraq comes first,” Sudani said in a post on X. “It will remain first through the determination of its loyal sons. Thank you to our people for supporting the path of work, construction, and achievement.”
The Independent High Electoral Commission said 99.98% of general polling stations have reported results, with nationwide turnout reaching 56.11%. A total of 12,009,453 Iraqis voted out of 21,404,291 registered voters, including ballots from general, special, and displaced-persons voting. Turnout varied by governorate, from 76.07% in Duhok to 40.11% in Maysan.
In remarks following the preliminary results, Sudani thanked the commission for organizing the elections and expressed appreciation to Iraq’s top religious authority.
“We thank the Independent High Electoral Commission for its efforts to make the electoral process a success, and we thank the supreme religious authority for its stance and guidance,” he said.
Sudani urged political forces to maintain unity and respect the people’s choice. “We call on everyone to make the country’s interest the top priority and to respect the will of the voters,” he said, adding that the next phase should focus on forming “a new government capable of representing programs.”
He affirmed that the Reconstruction and Development Coalition remains “open to all parties without exception.”
