Iranian ambassador hails Iraq’s elections as ‘important step’ towards ‘consolidating democracy’

BAGHDAD – Iran’s ambassador to Iraq, Mohammad Kazem Al Sadeq, on Wednesday praised Iraq’s parliamentary elections, calling the process an “important step” in strengthening democracy and national sovereignty.

“I congratulate Iraq’s government and people on the successful conduct of the parliamentary elections. This important step embodies the will of the Iraqi people and their national sovereignty, and represents another turning point in consolidating democracy and advancing development and stability in the country,” Al Sadeq wrote in a social media post.

The ambassador also expressed hope for a “prosperous future” for Iraq.

The commission announced late Tuesday that turnout exceeded 55%, with more than 12 million Iraqis participating nationwide. Preliminary results are expected to be released Wednesday.
