Second death in two days
Worker dies in electric shock at Erbil power station
ERBIL — A worker died on Wednesday evening after being electrocuted at the Omerawa power station in Qushtapa district, Erbil, according to a local police source.
The source from Qushtapa police told 964media that the victim was a 22-year-old man from Erbil. “The worker was electrocuted at 6 p.m. and died as a result,” the source said.
The body has been transferred to forensic medicine, the source added.
This marks the second worker death in Erbil Governorate within two days. A Syrian construction worker died Tuesday morning after falling from a residential project in the Waziran neighborhood of Erbil, local authorities said.
According to the Kurdistan Construction Workers’ Organization, at least 17 construction-related deaths were recorded in Sulaymaniyah between January and August 2024, alongside nine in Erbil and eight in the Garmian region.
The organization cited poor safety standards, lack of protective equipment, and inadequate training as major contributing factors. Falls, electrocution, structural collapses, machinery accidents, and severe bleeding were among the most common causes of death.
