Al-Araji, Iranian parliament speaker discuss expanding Iraq–Iran cooperation

NEWSROOM — National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji met Tuesday in Tehran with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf to discuss strengthening coordination between Iraq and Iran, according to a statement from al-Araji’s media office.

The meeting reviewed bilateral relations, border coordination under the joint security agreement, and efforts to expand economic and cultural ties. The two sides also discussed regional developments, potential threats, and the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.

Qalibaf highlighted the historical, social, cultural, and religious ties between Iraq and Iran, describing them as the foundation for deeper cooperation.

On Oct. 20, al-Araji met with Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani in Tehran, where both sides emphasized the need to maintain close security coordination. Al-Araji said Iraq is committed to regional stability and preventing escalation, noting that Baghdad has filed an official complaint with the UN Security Council against “the Zionist entity” over the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.

The high-level Iraqi security delegation headed by National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji met Tuesday in Tehran with the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Dr. Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.

The meeting included a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and ways to strengthen joint cooperation between the two neighboring countries. Discussions also reaffirmed the provisions of the joint security agreement concerning border management and addressed the development of economic and cultural relations in a way that serves the interests of both nations and their peoples.

The two sides also discussed the overall situation in the Middle East, potential threats, and the importance of avoiding conflict through dialogue and diplomatic channels.

Dr. Qalibaf emphasized the importance of deepening relations between Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran, noting the unique social, historical, cultural, and religious ties shared between the two peoples.

Al-Araji reaffirmed the Iraqi government’s position on addressing international challenges through diplomatic dialogue, stating that Iraq maintains communication with all countries to promote calm and stability in the region. He stressed that engagement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is crucial for coordinating positions and working toward lasting security and stability in the region.
