Iraq to expand network of traffic and speed cameras, starting with Baghdad
BAGHDAD — The General Directorate of Traffic announced Monday that it is to increase the number of traffic cameras and radars in Baghdad, with plans to expand the project to all governorates.
Brig. Nasir Abdul Sattar, director of media and public relations at the directorate, told the Iraqi News Agency that “cameras and radars have had a major impact in reducing traffic violations and accidents, showing clear improvement and compliance in areas equipped with these systems.”
He said the directorate “has agreed with a reputable company experienced in cameras and radar technology to install additional units covering all intersections, squares, and main streets in Baghdad.”
Abdul Sattar said the project is due to be completed within a year, adding that “20 radars will be installed at 40 intersections every four months until all areas in Baghdad are covered.”
Nationwide figures from Iraq’s Ministry of Planning show a 10% decline in traffic deaths in 2024 compared with the previous year. The annual report listed 11,763 incidents across governorates outside the Kurdistan Region, including 2,103 fatal crashes that killed 2,719 people, down from 3,019 in 2023. Men accounted for 82% of those fatalities.
