Court sentences man to death for 2013 double car bombing

MUTHANNA — The Muthanna Criminal Court on Monday sentenced a man to death for carrying out a double car bombing in the industrial area of Rumaitha district in 2013, according to a statement from the Judiciary’s media office.

Rumaitha is a city in Iraq’s southern governorate of Muthanna.

The explosions resulted in the deaths of two people and injured 13 others. Nearby shops and vehicles sustained significant damage.

The court issued the sentence under Article 4/1 in reference to Articles 2/1, 2/3, and 2/7 of Iraq’s Anti-Terrorism Law No. 13 of 2005.

There has been an uptick in such verdicts recently. In late September, the Kirkuk Criminal Court sentenced a man to death for his role in the 2014 assassination of the deputy head of the Kirkuk Appeals Court and several security personnel.

Earlier in July, Iraq’s Karkh Criminal Court issued a death sentence for a member of the Islamic State found guilty of participating in terrorist operations and the abduction of Yazidi civilians during the group’s 2014 assault on Sinjar district.

Also in July, a man convicted of participating in a 2011 bombing in Basra that killed 19 people and wounded 47 others was sentenced to death by the Basra Criminal Court.
