Two killed, two injured in head-on collision in Salah Al-Din
SALAH AL-DIN — Two people were killed and two others injured in a collision between a Toyota Corolla and a Kia Sorento on the main road between Tikrit and Baiji on Wednesday, according to a security source.
The source told 964media: “The Corolla driver was traveling at high speed when one of the rear tires exploded. He lost control, veered off course, and collided head-on with a Sorento coming from the opposite direction.”
The crash resulted in the death of the Corolla driver and a passenger traveling with him. The driver of the Sorento and one accompanying individual sustained injuries.
Nationwide figures from Iraq’s Ministry of Planning show a 10% decline in traffic deaths in 2024 compared with the previous year. The annual report listed 11,763 incidents across governorates outside the Kurdistan Region, including 2,103 fatal crashes that killed 2,719 people, down from 3,019 in 2023. Men accounted for 82% of those fatalities.
Although overall numbers fell, authorities say speeding, poor infrastructure, distracted driving, and weak enforcement remain key causes of deadly accidents.
