Erbil security forces arrest woman suspected in thefts targeting elderly, taxi driver
ERBIL — Security forces in Erbil have arrested a woman from outside the Kurdistan Region on suspicion of multiple thefts, including the theft of $5,000 from a taxi driver, according to a statement Tuesday from the Erbil Asayish Directorate.
The woman, identified by her initials W.H.A., was apprehended following a warrant issued by an investigative judge with the Erbil Security Agency. Authorities said she had been under surveillance by specialized teams investigating a string of thefts.
“She was caught with the stolen money in her possession during the arrest,” the statement said. Officers also recovered several pieces of gold jewelry and a mobile phone suspected to be linked to other incidents.
The suspect is accused of targeting elderly individuals after observing them closely, officials said. In one documented case, she allegedly stole $5,000 from a taxi driver.
The directorate said the investigation remains ongoing and emphasized its commitment to pursuing individuals who endanger public safety. “We affirm our continued efforts to pursue anyone who threatens public safety and to take legal action against them in accordance with the applicable laws,” the statement said.
