New Wasit academy draws 150 young soccer players despite limited resources
WASIT — A newly launched soccer academy in Al-Suwaira, Wasit, has begun training 150 boys born between 2011 and 2016, aiming to develop players for Iraq’s national teams despite limited resources and facilities.
Coach Nizar Marah, who leads the project, said the academy was established through personal initiative in collaboration with the Al-Suwaira Youth Forum. “We were hesitant at first, but the number of applicants surprised us,” Marah said. “We now have more than 150 registered players.”
The academy uses a small field for training due to the absence of a full-sized soccer field. Marah highlighted the need for more soccer balls and basic training equipment. “What we do now depends on support from families and well-wishers, but we need more,” he said.
Daily sessions include not only physical training but also one-hour lectures on educational, social, and health topics. Marah said this approach has gained the trust of parents and encouraged them to enroll their children.
“There is real talent in this city,” he said. “If we continue, this generation will produce many national team players.”
Marah expressed confidence in the academy’s program and urged local authorities to support the initiative.
