Along the Euphrates

Samawah’s river corniche comes alive at night with cafés, games, and family gatherings

SAMAWAH — As the sun sets over the Euphrates River, Samawah’s corniche comes to life, transforming into a lively stretch of riverside cafés, games, and conversation that draws locals well into the night.

More than 50 cafés line the popular waterfront, offering a mix of atmospheres—from sleek, Western-style venues with contemporary décor and diverse menus to traditional spots adorned with colorful local textiles. The result is a space that appeals to a wide cross-section of the city.

“During summer, the turnout is higher than in winter,” said Amer Mohsen, a café owner. “We open at 4 p.m. and prepare to welcome guests with meals, hot and cold drinks, entertainment games, and hookahs.”

From elderly patrons sipping spiced tea to younger visitors playing backgammon, billiards, and card games, the cafés offer an evening escape that reflects Samawah’s rhythm and culture.

Eyad Hamza, a regular at the corniche, said activity begins in earnest around 8 p.m. and continues past midnight. “These cafés are our relief after a long workday,” he said. “We gather here to eat, play games, and exchange conversations.”

Across the river, the opposite bank caters mostly to families. Restaurants there serve grilled river fish, Middle Eastern fare, and Western dishes in a more relaxed, family-friendly setting.

“Corniche Samawah is a unique space,” said resident Ahmed Mohammed. “Youth spend time in cafés playing and socializing, while families head to the newer corniche.”
