Pilgrims gather in Daquq to mark anniversary of Imam Zain Al-Abidin’s death

KIRKUK — Thousands of pilgrims from across Iraq gathered in Daquq on Sunday to commemorate the death anniversary of Imam Zain Al-Abidin, observed annually on the 25th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.

The event drew visitors from several governorates, including parts of the Kurdistan Region, and featured more than 150 service tents, or mawakeb, organized by local communities representing a range of ethnic and religious backgrounds.

“Today, more than 150 service tents are set up in Daquq to serve visitors of Imam Zain Al-Abidin, bringing together all ethnicities, sects, and denominations at the site,” said Fakhr Al-Din Zain Al-Abidin.

Imam Zain Al-Abidin, the son of Imam Hussein and great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, is revered in Shia Islam as the fourth Imam. He survived the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE and is remembered for his devotion, scholarship, and spiritual leadership.

Adnan Ahmed, another resident, said the commemorations reflected Daquq’s spirit of inclusivity. “The people of Daquq take pride in hosting guests from across the country — Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmen — in their tents and processions. This is a message of love, brotherhood, and peace,” he told 964media.

Local volunteer Tahseen Zain Al-Abidin said services began early Sunday and would continue through Monday. “Every year on the 25th of Muharram, we serve visitors as part of our commitment to the values of love and peace,” he said.
