Man arrested in Sulaymaniyah over repeated phone thefts targeting women

SULAYMANIYAH — Police in Sulaymaniyah on Wednesday announced the arrest of a man accused of stealing a mobile phone from a woman on the street, an act authorities say is part of a pattern of similar thefts.

The arrest came after a woman filed a complaint reporting that her phone had been forcibly taken by an unidentified assailant. Police said in a statement that, following the report and with judicial authorization, an investigation was launched to identify the suspect.

“He was located and taken into custody,” the statement said.

Investigators said the man, identified as S.M.F. and born in 2003, had carried out “several thefts targeting women’s phones and handbags in various areas of Sulaymaniyah.”

The suspect has been formally charged and ordered held in detention while the investigation continues.
