A thick dust storm reduces visibility on a main road in Erbil
Kirkuk records 109 cases
Dust storm sends nearly 170 to hospitals across Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk
NEWSROOM — Nearly 170 people were hospitalized in the past two days across the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk governorate due to respiratory problems caused by a severe dust storm, according to local health authorities. Most patients were treated and discharged.
Kirkuk recorded the highest number of cases, with 109 people seeking treatment. Erbil reported more than 30 cases, and Sulaymaniyah recorded 30. No dust-related hospitalizations were reported in Halabja or Duhok, officials said.
The dust storm, which has blanketed large parts of the region since Sunday, is expected to continue through Wednesday, though meteorologists say its intensity is weakening.
In response, the Sulaymaniyah General Directorate of Health issued a public advisory urging residents to take precautions. “It’s better to remain at home and not go out,” the statement said, adding that people should wear masks outdoors and change them frequently.
The advisory also recommended using eye drops, rinsing eyes before meals, and washing them regularly to reduce irritation. Residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed to minimize indoor dust exposure.
“Drink plenty of water during high temperatures,” the statement added. “If driving, cover your vehicle’s air vents. Those with chronic respiratory conditions should continue using oxygen support and receive treatment under medical supervision.”
A similar dust storm in May sent dozens to hospitals across the region. At that time, Sulaymaniyah reported 12 cases, Erbil had 41, and Kirkuk again recorded the highest number, with 128 hospitalizations.
