Iraq welcomes US-brokered Iran-Israel ceasefire, urges commitment to truce

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday welcomed the American-brokered ceasefire between Iran and Israel, calling it a positive step toward easing tensions and stabilizing the region.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its welcome of the American initiative that resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Israeli entity,” the ministry said in an official statement.

The ministry added, “Iraq remains committed to solutions that guarantee the security and safety of the region’s peoples.”

The statement also praised Qatar’s “diplomatic and mediation efforts,” crediting them with helping bring about the truce.

“There must be full commitment to the ceasefire, given its critical importance in calming the situation and creating an environment suitable for the resumption of dialogue and negotiations,” the ministry said.

It concluded by congratulating Iran and expressing hope that the agreement “will mark a genuine beginning of a fundamental and lasting resolution to existing tensions through peaceful and diplomatic frameworks.”

The ceasefire came into effect at 7 a.m. local time Tuesday, following an Iranian missile strike Monday on the U.S.-operated Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. The strike was in retaliation for American airstrikes two days earlier on Iranian nuclear facilities. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire in a post on his Truth Social platform.
