U.S. embassy in Baghdad issues security alert, warns of potential attacks against US interests

BAGHDAD – The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a security alert Sunday warning American citizens in Iraq of a heightened risk of attacks, urging them to avoid areas frequented by foreigners and large gatherings.

In a statement, the embassy said it was “aware of the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence or attacks against U.S. businesses and locations frequented by U.S. citizens.”

“We urge all U.S. citizens in Iraq to avoid locations frequented by foreigners and any large gatherings or crowds,” the embassy added.

The U.S. Department of State continues to maintain a Level 4 Travel Advisory for Iraq, advising U.S. citizens: “Do Not Travel.”

The embassy said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. The embassy also advised individuals to monitor local media and be aware of their surroundings.

The alert follows a warning from Kataib Hezbollah, one of Iraq’s most powerful militias, which stated it would “act against” U.S. interests and military bases throughout the region if Washington becomes involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran.

Reports indicate that the Iraqi government has asked Iran to refrain from targeting U.S. military positions within Iraq, warning that such actions could pull the country into a broader regional conflict.
