Staff and students go head to head

University of Kirkuk launches university sports championship

KIRKUK, October 24 — The University of Kirkuk kicked off its university sports championship on Monday, featuring competitions in badminton, chess, and volleyball, with staff and student participants.

Raad Al-Saqa, University of Kirkuk Media Director, told 964: “The Student Activities Department at the university embraced the idea of organizing three sports tournaments over three days this month. University staff members and students are taking part in these events.”

Al-Saqa continued: “The goal of the championship is to revitalize the sports sector, build confidence among students, and enhance their skills in preparation for participation in various local competitions.”

Ali Khalil, a student in the College of Engineering, shared his enthusiasm, saying: “Students from each college were selected and placed according to their favorite sports. Personally, I chose chess as I have been playing it since my childhood and I’m ready for the challenge.”

Staff and students are participating in knock-out competitions with four teams competing in volleyball, eight players in table tennis, and ten players in chess. 

Dr. Imran Jamal, President of the University of Kirkuk, handed out awards to the winners of the chess and table tennis tournaments. The recognition extended to members and students from the faculties of Humanities, Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Arts.
