Two killed in high-speed crash at Tuz Khurmatu gate
SALAH AL-DIN — Two people were killed Sunday when a pickup truck traveling at high speed crashed into the entrance gate of Tuz Khurmatu district in Salah Al-Din governorate, local officials said.
Ihsan Abbas, director of traffic in Tuz Khurmatu, told 964media the incident involved a Nissan double-cabin vehicle en route from Kirkuk to Baghdad. “The vehicle lost control at high speed near the Tuz Khurmatu gate and crashed into it, killing both the driver and a passenger — both residents of Baghdad — instantly,” he said.
Abbas added that investigators found multiple bottles of alcoholic beverages inside the vehicle and believe the victims had been drinking while driving. “Due to intoxication, they lost control and caused the accident,” he said.
Maher Ali, a staff member at Tuz Khurmatu General Hospital, confirmed the hospital received the two bodies shortly after the crash and said both victims were intoxicated. “The bodies are currently at the hospital, and the families have been contacted. After the investigation and legal procedures are completed, they will be handed over,” he said.
Tuz Khurmatu lies along a key corridor linking the Kurdistan Region with Baghdad. Traffic incidents are common along the route, and in some cases, crashes are resolved privately without being reported to authorities.
