Southern Iraq faces 48°C heat as temperatures continue climbing

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Meteorological Authority said Thursday that temperatures are expected to remain high across the country over the next four days, with generally clear skies and daytime highs approaching 50 degrees Celsius in some southern governorates.

According to the authority, Friday’s weather will be clear nationwide, with temperatures remaining steady in northern areas and rising slightly in central and southern areas.

Forecast high temperatures for Friday include 40°C in Duhok and Sulaymaniyah, 42°C in Erbil, 43°C in Nineveh, 45°C in Kirkuk, Anbar and Diyala, and 46°C in Baghdad, Salah Al-Din, Wasit, Karbala and Basra.

Temperatures are expected to reach 47°C in Babil, Diwaniyah, Muthanna, Najaf and Maysan, while Dhi Qar is forecast to record the highest temperature at 48°C.

The authority said Saturday will bring clear skies across central and southern Iraq, with some cloud cover in northern areas. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly compared with Friday.

On Sunday, temperatures are forecast to decline slightly nationwide, while weather conditions will remain clear.

By Monday, temperatures are expected to increase again across the country, with continued clear weather, according to the forecast.
