Baghdad man missing after diving into Lake Hamrin
DIYALA — A 27-year-old man from Baghdad has been missing since early Monday after diving into Lake Hamrin in Diyala governorate and failing to resurface, according to a local security source.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. near the lake’s shore. “He dove in and didn’t come back up,” the source told 964media. Rescue teams arrived within an hour and launched search operations, but by Monday afternoon the man had not been found.
Authorities detained two of the man’s friends for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation. Police said efforts are underway to gather additional details about the circumstances of the disappearance.
Divers continued search operations into the afternoon, combing the area where the man was last seen.
Lake Hamrin, located in Diyala governorate, is a popular recreation spot but has seen several drowning incidents in past years due to sudden depth changes and lack of safety infrastructure. Authorities have repeatedly warned visitors to take precautions when entering the water.
