Teenager presumed drowned after boat capsizes in Lake Hamrin
DIYALA — A 17-year-old girl is presumed to have drowned on Friday after a boat carrying her and her family of eight capsized in Lake Hamrin, northeast of Diyala. Search operations are still underway to recover her body, according to security sources.
“A boat carrying a family of eight overturned in Lake Hamrin due to excessive speed combined with strong waves in the lake,” a security source told 964media.
Nearby boats and local residents rushed to rescue the family members, successfully saving all but one—a 17-year-old girl.
Emergency teams, including police and marine units, are currently conducting an intensive search operation to find her.
Authorities are urging caution and adherence to safety protocols when operating boats in the lake, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
