Five Twairij residents killed as vehicle plunges into river near Shomali Bridge

KARBALA — Five people from the town of Twairij in Karbala governorate were killed Saturday when their vehicle veered off the highway near Shomali Bridge in Babil and plunged into the Al-Ward River. Four of the victims were members of the same family.

The group was reportedly en route to visit a friend in Babil governorate when the crash occurred along the road connecting Shomali to Diwaniyah. The vehicle overturned multiple times before entering the water. Local residents rushed to the scene and helped retrieve the bodies from the submerged car.

“A tragic traffic accident took place on the highway near Shomali Bridge,” said Montadhar Al-Shafei, mayor of Twairij, in a statement to 964media. “Five people from the Hindiya district lost their lives, including four members of one family and a friend.”

Habeeb Ali Hussein, a resident of Twairij, said the group had been heading to a social gathering. “They were going to attend a gathering at a friend’s house in Babil governorate,” he said. “When they reached the Shomali–Diwaniyah road, their car overturned several times and fell into the river.”

He confirmed that none of the passengers survived. “Three brothers, their nephew, and their friend all died. No one knows exactly what caused the accident yet, but locals acted quickly to pull them out of the river,” he said.
