Al-Sudani, President Rashid review Arab League Summit outcomes, pledge to strengthen Iraq’s regional role

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met Tuesday with President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid to review the outcomes of the 34th Arab League Summit, which was held in Baghdad over the weekend, and emphasized the need to build on its decisions to strengthen Iraq’s regional standing.

In a statement issued by Al-Sudani’s media office, the leaders “affirmed the importance of working to implement these outcomes in a way that fulfills the Arab Summit’s goals and contributes to establishing security and stability in the region.” The meeting also stressed the need to “strengthen Iraq’s role” through continued engagement and coordination with Arab states.

Despite months of preparation and diplomatic outreach, the summit was marked by the absence of most Arab heads of state, who were represented instead by their foreign ministers. Among the Gulf states, only the Emir of Qatar attended in person.

Iraqi government spokesperson Basem Al-Awadi, speaking in a televised interview with Al Iraqiya TV, framed the summit as a learning opportunity for Iraq’s foreign policy institutions. “Political experiences are lessons… all of these are lessons from which countries can benefit,” he said.
