Iraq braces for soaring temperatures nearing 45°C this week
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Meteorological Authority on Tuesday forecast continued high temperatures across the country, particularly in central and southern regions, as a hot air mass moves in from the Arabian Peninsula.
A significant rise in temperatures is expected in most cities, with the heatwave peaking Friday. Forecasts show highs reaching between 44°C and 45°C in governorates including Basra, Dhi Qar, Maysan, Diwaniyah, Najaf, Karbala, Babil, Wasit and Baghdad.
The authority attributed the heatwave to a subtropical high-pressure system originating in the Arabian Peninsula, expected to dominate Iraq’s weather through the end of the week.
A gradual decline in temperatures is anticipated early next week, though conditions will remain warmer than usual for the season.
Residents are advised to avoid direct sunlight during midday hours, stay hydrated, and wear light clothing.
