Drones intercepted over Erbil with falling debris causing damage

ERBIL — Air defenses intercepted drones over Erbil governorate on Wednesday night, with falling debris causing material damage but no reported casualties, according to preliminary information.

The first drone was intercepted at about 9 p.m., with debris coming down in several neighborhoods. Videos circulated on social media showed a fragment striking a vehicle on an Erbil street, damaging it without injuring anyone. A second drone was directed toward the city about 15 minutes later.

Security forces deployed to the affected locations and began investigating and collecting debris from the intercepted drones.

It was the first attack directed at Erbil city itself since fighting resumed between the United States and Iran. Strikes on camps of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the governorate that have continued through the conflict.

Erbil has faced repeated drone attacks in 2026, with incidents targeting the airport, energy facilities, commercial sites and locations on the city’s outskirts. Several drones were intercepted, while debris and strikes caused material damage and disrupted activity at some sites, prompting renewed calls from Kurdistan Region officials for stronger federal action against the armed groups behind the attacks.
