Avoid driving on highways

Traffic unit in southern Iraq urges caution during dust storms

BASRA, October 19 — The traffic unit in Safwan, southwest of Basra, called on drivers on Thursday to avoid driving on highways as much as possible due to dust storms that have caused low visibility. They also provided a set of guidelines for those who have no choice but to travel in such conditions.

Assistant Director of the Traffic Unit – Commissioner Mansour Abdul Hassan, spoke to Network 964, saying:

“We urge citizens to refrain from driving on both external and internal roads to the greatest extent possible during these dust storms.

Safwan is an open area located in the desert regions and is more affected by dust storms than the central areas of the province, which is why the visibility reduction is more significant.

If citizens find themselves obliged to drive their vehicles under these weather conditions, they should adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Ensure the use of headlights (high beams) while driving.

2. Keep to the right side of the road and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to avoid sudden stops.

3. If driving on a highway, do not wait until visibility is completely lost; instead, head to the nearest exit while activating hazard lights.

4. The most crucial advice is for drivers to drive at the lowest possible speed with vigilance and alertness to avoid accidents.”
