Kurdistan Region to mark Eid on Sunday
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region’s Moon Sighting Committee announced that Sunday will be the first day of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking at a press conference in Erbil, Kurdistan Regional Government Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs Pshtiwan Sadiq confirmed the committee’s decision, declaring the conclusion of Ramadan.
Both the Iraqi federal government and the KRG previously declared a weeklong public holiday for Eid.
The Kurdistan Region’s announcement aligns with similar declarations by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which also confirmed Sunday as the start of Eid.
However, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s office announced that Monday will mark the first day of Eid, following the completion of a full 30 days of Ramadan. Iraq’s Sunni Endowment also declared that Sunday would be the 30th day of Ramadan, with Eid beginning Monday.
This year, Shia Muslims in Iraq began fasting on March 2, while most Sunni Muslims, including Kurds, started on March 1.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset.
