Iraq announces weeklong public holiday for Eid Al-Fitr
BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Council of Ministers announced Tuesday that the public sector will get the entire upcoming week off in observance of Eid Al-Fitr.
The first day of Eid is expected to fall on Sunday or Monday, depending on the sighting of the moon.
Eid Al-Fitr is a major Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims worldwide observe Ramadan as a period of fasting from dawn to sunset, refraining from eating, drinking and smoking during daylight hours.
Throughout Ramadan, both the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government reduced the official workday by one hour across all state institutions to accommodate employees observing the fast.
