Iraqi News Agency journalist killed in Baghdad shooting as authorities deny assassination
BAGHDAD – The Iraqi News Agency reported Wednesday evening that journalist Laith Mohammed Redha died after being shot during a violent dispute in the Arasat area of Baghdad.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances behind the fatal shooting and arrest those responsible.
Baghdad’s Al-Rusafa Police Command later issued a clarification after social media reports described the incident as an assassination. In its statement, the command said, “We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim. However, we clarify that this was not an assassination, but rather a dispute between the journalist, Laith Mohammed Redha, and his neighbors.”
Police said security forces are conducting search and inspection operations to locate the suspect and promised further details as the inquiry unfolds.
The killing has raised concerns among press freedom advocates, who call for greater protections for journalists in Iraq. Some social media posts claim that the perpetrator was an advisor to a prominent Iraqi politician.
